Spring budget 2017

Philip Hammond’s budget on 8th March committed to “Investing in skills and education is the key to inclusive growth – to an economy that works for everyone.”  This includes funding for the following:

New funding to support the introduction of the new technical routes: The Sainsbury new 15 technical routes for 16-19 year olds (T-Levels to run alongside academic routes) received £500m (£100m this parliament) alongside changes to training hours and work placements. The new routes will be introduced from 2019-20.

Maintenance loans: FE maintenance loans for qualifications at Levels 4 and 5 in National Colleges and Institutes of Technology only phased in from 2019.

Lifelong learning pilots: £40m for the DfE to use in testing “the effectiveness of different approaches to lifelong learning so that we can identify what works best and help the next generation learn and train throughout their lives.”  The Learning and Work Institute has said that it hopes part of this money can be used to trial Personal Learning Accounts
